Development of methodology for calculating Greenhouse Gas Emission of Agricultural products

To contribute to steady green growth, low carbon society and government’s greenhouse reduction objective in 2020, Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs launched ‘Low Carbon Agricultural products Certification’ in 2012. In this certification system, greenhouse gas emission of target product during cultivation is compared with product category’s average greenhouse gas emission. If target product’s greenhouse gas emissions is lower than average, this target product can achieve certification.

Because this certification system is based on comparing of greenhouse gas emission, there is a need for reliable methodology for calculating greenhouse gas emission of agricultural product. In this study, the objective is to develop reliable methodology for calculating greenhouse gas emission of agricultural product. For reliable and suitable methodology, reflection of present conditions of Korean farms is needed. In this study, investigations of Korean farms present condition are conducted. With the results of investigation, methodological principles from ISO 14044 are adopted.

For calculating of greenhouse gas emission of agricultural products during cultivation, production stage of cultivation materials and cultivation stage of agricultural product are considered as system boundary and unit area of cultivation is considered as reference flow.
